I’ve been thinking recently about how the human body is engineered. Honestly, it's amazing that we can stand up and walk. Look at how weird we are- these outsized torsos balanced on two legs that are asked to do so much each day. The balancing act that it takes to even take a step, let alone run, dance, climb and jump. And think about arms- these dangling appendages that we also ask to do impossible tasks. We lurch through the world, our entire being dependent on two funny feet- limbs that contain more bones and joints than anything else in the body. Of course things go wrong, why wouldn’t they…..
As an artist who makes figurative pieces I am constantly thinking about the human body. My own designs and engineering processes undergo continual evolution to accommodate both my ideas and the materials I’m using. I work like a handyman cobbling together drawings and sculptures from elements found, borrowed, and imagined.
My sculptures are a constant balancing act. They stand awkwardly balanced, looking like they may tumble at any moment- but they never do. Perhaps a metaphor for the way I move through my life as an artist. Perhaps not.
